The protection of fundamental human rights was a foundation stone in the establishment of the United States over 200 years ago. Since then, a central goal of U.S. Rule of Law Institute foreign policy has been the promotion of respect for human rights, as embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

NORTH AFRICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICE (NALE)

The United States Rule of Law Institute supports international organizations and donors efforts to reform security and justice institutions to ensure they protect the rights of the Middle East and North African region. The United States Rule of Law Institute’s strategy in Middle east is to promote interministerial reform efforts for the police, justice sector, and prison system to complement more immediate-term efforts to bolster basic capacities through training and equipment

DEMOCRACY & HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICE (DHR)

Supporting democracy and promoting respect for individual rights promotes fundamental American values and helps create a more secure, stable, and prosperous world.

COMBAT TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS OFFICE (CTP)

The TIP Office leads the Department’s global efforts to combat human trafficking through the prosecution of traffickers, the protection of victims, and the prevention of human trafficking by: objectively analyzing government efforts and identifying global trends, engaging in and supporting strategic bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, targeting foreign assistance to build sustainable capacity of governments and civil society, advancing the coordination of federal anti-trafficking policies across agencies, managing and leveraging operational resources to achieve strategic priorities, and engaging and partnering with civil society, the private sector, and the public to advance the fight against human trafficking.

ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS OFFICE (EBA)

Every day, the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EBA) creates jobs at home, boosts economic opportunities overseas, and makes America more secure. EBA promotes a strong American economy by leveling the playing field for American companies doing business in global markets, attracting foreign investors to create jobs in America, and deploying economic tools to deny financing to terrorists, human rights abusers, and corrupt officials. Economics has become the indispensable foreign policy tool of our time. Everything we do is to ensure that the United States remains the world’s strongest and most dynamic economy.
